FASTag is the RFID sticker on a vehicle’s windscreen that pays national-highway tolls from a linked wallet or bank account. IndiaTolls is an independent estimator — it does not sell tags, open wallets, or take toll payments.

What FASTag is
IHMCL describes FASTag as a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) device affixed to the windscreen. As the vehicle passes a plaza, the tag talks to the reader and the toll is taken from the account linked to that tag. It is the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and NHAI; IHMCL, a company promoted by NHAI, implements it. NPCI provides clearing and settlement.
The tag is assigned to one vehicle registration. IHMCL’s “One Vehicle One FASTag” rule means only one active tag per vehicle; older tags on the same registration are deactivated. Carrying a tag in hand, or sticking it with extra tape instead of the official adhesive, is treated as improper affixation and can get the tag blacklisted.
Mandatory on national highways
Amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 made FASTag mandatory for class M and N vehicles — four-wheelers and above carrying goods or passengers — with effect from 1 January 2021. IHMCL and NHAI publish that mandate on their user FAQ.
MoRTH also declared every lane at National Highway fee plazas a dedicated FASTag lane from the midnight of 15/16 February 2021. IHMCL’s scheme guidelines repeat that a vehicle that is not fitted with a valid, functional FASTag and enters a FASTag lane pays a fee equal to two times the fee applicable to that vehicle class, under the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008.
How visitors and rentals typically pay
A FASTag is issued against a specific vehicle’s registration certificate. Official purchase channels ask for that RC, KYC of the registered owner, and then affix the tag to that windscreen. Short-term visitors therefore almost never buy a personal tag for a car they do not own.
A hired or rental car should already have a tag on that vehicle. Ask the desk, before you leave the lot, that the sticker is on the windscreen, is the active tag for that registration, and has enough balance for the trip. Tolls you drive are charged to that vehicle’s wallet — usually settled through the rental, not through IndiaTolls.
IndiaTolls does not sell FASTags, process recharges, or take highway payments. If a desk cannot confirm a working tag, that is a rental or issuer problem, not something this site can fix.
Published fees and unpaid-fee rules
The government has capped the physical tag’s sale price at a maximum of ₹100 including GST. NHAI’s FAQ also notes that issuers usually add a security deposit and a first recharge, and that those amounts vary by bank and vehicle class. This page does not quote a bank’s current extras or promotional offers.
Two published consequences matter on the road. First, entering a dedicated FASTag lane without a valid, functional tag attracts twice the applicable user fee (NH Fee Rules 2008, restated in IHMCL’s 2026 scheme guidelines). Second, the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026 — in force from 17 March 2026 — add an electronic-notice path for unpaid user fee. NHAI’s 18 March 2026 press note: an e-notice may be sent by SMS, email, app, or portal; the amount payable on that notice is twice the applicable toll, but if you pay within 72 hours only the original user fee is due. You may file a representation on the designated portal within 72 hours; the agency has five days to dispose of it, or the claim lapses. Unpaid dues beyond 15 days with no pending representation may be recorded in VAHAN and can restrict vehicle-related services until cleared.
How to recharge (this site does not do it)
Recharge is done with the issuer, not with IndiaTolls. IHMCL lists bank web portals, UPI, net banking, cards, BBPS, and the My FASTag app. NHAI FASTag wallets can be topped up in that app; some NHAI wallets also accept a missed-call balance check on the number published by IHMCL. Existing wallets can be topped up by as little as ₹1; a first recharge at purchase is a separate issuer charge.
A blacklisted tag will not pay at the plaza. IHMCL says common causes are a low or empty wallet, a vehicle-class mismatch, or a tag that is not properly affixed. Call the issuer to clear the block. Keep enough balance before a long corridor — Delhi–Jaipur or Yamuna Expressway included.
